We see The Working Man J. A. Sawyer wearing non-descript grey sweat pants and blue T-Shirt that has definitely seen its better days along with elbow and knee pads as he runs the ropes in a ring. The room is only about twice the size of the ring itself and the ring is crammed into the corner to maximize open space. The rest of the room includes a TV with a VHS/DVD dual deck and a game system, a mini-refrigerator, a table, and a mish-mash of ten various types of light chairs and a stack of folding chairs against a wall. There is also a weight bench to the side. Sawyer runs the ropes about ten times and stops, breathing deeply as the camera zooms slowly to him. He smiles and winks at his TV audience.
Sawyer: “I’m here is Grand Rapids, Michigan training for my next match this Friday for RPW, and for once I’m really looking forward to this match. First, I’m glad that I’ve made it through a month working for RPW without a tables match! Every promotion I worked for in 2008 had me in a tables match within four weeks of my debut or return and I didn’t ask for any of them! I’ve become known for these things without ever wanting them! So thanks for that, RPW execs!
“Secondly, I’m up against Devilyn Hurricane for the Rising Phoenix Hardcore Championship. Now, grudgingly, I have some respect for Devilyn. I’ve seen so many Hardcore specialists that were basically glorified chair-swingers with no real skills that sometimes I don’t like the style. I’ve been in the ring with Mr. Hurricane and I’ve watched his other matches and he certainly does not fit that description. He has some real wrestling skills and has shown he can operate very well within the normal rules of pro-wrestling. For whatever his reasons, he chooses the hardcore style as his preference. And he’s much better than your average Extremist. I certainly wouldn’t be embarrassed if I lost RPW’s Hardcore title to him.
“That doesn’t mean I’ll be handing it to him without a fight, however. So far I’m undefeated in Rising Phoenix Wrestling and that is something I’d like to keep going. And I’m old school tough. Kind of like a solid concrete bunker that can withstand any CAT 5 wind that tries to knock it down, I can take a few shots looking for a good opening. I‘ll do my best to wear Devilyn down until he’s nothing but a tropical storm! There is going to be a hurricane in RPW and the Working Man has all the tools and raw materials to build a shelter to weather the onslaught! I’m short, I’m fat, I’m homely, and I am The Rising Phoenix Hardcore Champion!”
Sawyer hops down from the ring and steps off camera as the shot fades to black.

The camera shot shows a shadowy hall way in what looks like a truck entrance of a large building. The camera pans to the right to reveal The Working Man J. A. Sawyer walking along the outer wall of the place. He is wearing blue jeans and a dark blue work jacket with “Sawyer” on a white tag over the right side of the chest. Every now and then he stops and scrutinizes the wall, even pushing against it as if he could knock it down. Finally, he nods in satisfaction as an interviewer steps into the scenes.
Interviewer: “I’m here with the Working Man J. A. Sawyer, current Rising Phoenix Wrestling’s Hardcore Champion. Working Man, this is the day before the RPW show. What brings you to the arena so early and what were you doing while we waited for the interview.”
Sawyer, stepping up next to the interviewer: “Why, I wanted to check the structural integrity of the building, that’s what. I wanted to look around, make sure there are no cracks, shoddy workmanship, or obvious flaws on the site. There is a hurricane coming tomorrow so I wanted to make sure. This place looks pretty well maintained, though. I do not foresee any problems.”
Interviewer, a bit confused: “You…want to make sure the arena can stand against a storm outside?”
Sawyer with a laugh: “No, you silly goober. I want to make sure it can keep everything in! Tomorrow Devilyn Hurricane, a previous Hardcore Champ, gets a chance to take the belt back. He is a hardcore specialist with some real wrestling skills and I’m an good all-around wrestler who has shown great resilience in unusual or brutal matches. If he wants my title as much as I want to keep it, then there is going to be an explosion in this place. In an Extreme Rules match, we can go anywhere. Its good to know that this structure is sturdy enough.”
Interviewer: “About that match, then, what do you think are your chances of winning?”
Sawyer: “All of my fans know that I don’t promise I’m going to win. There is no point in that. The first time you lose, you just proved you are a liar and talk out of your butt. My fans also know that I like to stay within the rules of a match. In this case, there are very few rules, so the crowd and at-home audience are going to see something they don’t see often: The Working Man cutting loose! I can pick up anything I want and the ref can’t say a word about it. I can throw Devilyn into a dumpster! I could toss him down the stairs! I could run him over with a Hi-Lo! Well, maybe not that. That would be too extreme. Still, this is going to be a hotly contended match between two forces in wrestling, and I’m going to pull out all the stops to win this. It may not be a big World Championship or anything, but the Rising Phoenix Hardcore Title is mine right now, and I’ve grown rather fond of having it in my possession.”
Interviewer: “Anything to say to Devilyn Hurricane before tomorrow?”
Sawyer: “Sure! Devilyn, I accept that you are a hardcore specialist and that you want the gold back. I actually admire that. Just expect that I’m not losing the Hardcore Championship easily. I see holding this title as my job right now, and my work ethic is strict and strong! I’m expecting you to come at me with guns blazing and I expect this to be a difficult match. But I’ll work it out, one way or another. That’s my job and I’m really good at it.”
Interviewer: “The Working Man, ladies and gentlemen.”
